Plant only a pinch 2 or 3 seeds per hole. Place transplants in a slight saucer-shaped depression. This means you wont waste seeds! The traditional way is to plant lots of seeds then cut off the majority and leave the strongest.

Water by hand from a bucket of sun-warmed water. When you finish harvesting a square foot, add only compost and replant it with a new and different crop. Here's how Im starting my square foot garden : I decided how big of an area I want to use, I am placing my SFG on the roof of my house, which I made sure received at least 8 hours of full sun.

I am going big and starting with lots of boxes. So after thorough planning I decided I want two 4x4 square foot boxes which is the standard two smaller boxes for root vegetables like carrots and potatoes, and one long box for herbs.

You can download the guide I created for the carpenters here. Its not the most accurate illustration of what the boxes look like in the end, but the numbers are right. Also Most vegetables require 6 inches of soil, I've decided to use around 20cm.

In my case, I have to apply bottoms since they're going to be in the roof. The bottoms are waterproof 2cm thick plywood. The plywood has to have around 0. My boxes have weird squares in the plywood because the carpenter mistook 0. Im sure its much more fun. I don't have the skill or time, so I had the boxes done for 50KD total, 30 for the wood and 20 for the building. The work was done by Ibrahim in Classic Design Carpentry : Don't forget, you can collect sawdust for free and use it as a carbon source in your compost!

Maybe I'll paint the outsides of the boxes with the kids before the season starts, what do you think? Tagged: boxes compost garden gardening harvest Kuwait plant square foot garden Summer Planning wood. Posted on August 09, Older Post. Newer Post. Comments AlbertAbeve. Teen Girls Pussy Pics.

So our materials concept was one of the reasons we designed the house as a cylinder of individual layers. It was also essential for me that the rooms are accessible for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Are there also architectural references for the circle?

Certainly — the yurt, the new Apple HQ in the United States, the Pantheon… We wanted to take this tradition and reinterpret it with textile architecture.

The fabrics, which are up to five metres long, overlap in layers — some thicker, some thinner — so that, where necessary, they create transparent or semi-transparent walls. Then there is the interplay of light and shade. All-in-all it makes for a really sensual space. The only enclosed areas in the house are the bathroom and the bedroom.

How have you dealt with the walls there? In the bathroom, I worked freely and conceptually. Therefore the walls are covered in tiles made out of soap, which in fact is a very personal choice. My studio in Offenbach am Main is directly opposite the Kappus soap factory. When we open our windows in the summer, it often smells of roses or lavender.

Kappus has produced a special soap tile for Das Haus at imm.

Das Haus needs to be inhabitable but at the same time look to the future. How have you tackled these aims? I think that above all Das Haus represents an attitude. It is unrealistic to actually live in the structure we have designed — without right angles and with walls made of fabric, but the house is comfortable throughout, mainly because of the textiles and the furniture.

Cologne Exhibition Centre, Hall 2. Professionals: January, 9 am to 6 pm Public: January, 9 am to 6 pm Sunday to 5 pm. From Design Post to the Gerling Quartier and Ehrenfeld: there is a lot to explore in Cologne, not only for design aficionados but also for architecture and art enthusiasts. Happy Birthday Design Post!

Celebrating a decade of inspiring ideas and protagonists For 10 years, Design Post — located opposite the trade fair — has been about all kinds of interior design and inspiration. Many of our German and Dutch collaborators visit the Montana stand at Design Post during imm cologne. It is a magnificent institution. The original industrial building was converted into an exhibition space that today houses 37 international design firms.

The showroom offers around m2 of exhibition space bathed in natural light, and provides an environment that creatively links the past and the present.

The main hall, with its eight aisles and three-hinged arches, was built between and in the Deutz area of Cologne, serving as a postal branch and sort-. In the steel construction, innovative in its day, was protected under a preservation order and used as a railway station for the Deutsche Post. When the building was modernised by OIII architects of Amsterdam, the strict requirements of the preservation order had to be observed. In these surrounds, companies can create the perfect stage for themselves and their products and thereby emphasise their own particular features.

Each brand is able to present itself within the space available in a way that ties in with its philosophy. The wide variety of products — lights, sofas, beds, carpets, textiles, small furnishings, and bathroom accessories — makes Design Post a source of inspiration and a marketplace for trends.

Information and exchange are paramount here, as nothing can be purchased at Design Post; product enquiries are passed on to the relevant companies or specialist shops.

It serves as a showroom for the whole year. We therefore decided to be present in Cologne not only during imm but full time. The unwavering idea maintained by the participating exhibitors of presenting a clear selection guarantees optimum quality.

A further advantage of Design Post is that it makes meetings and exchanges possible. And particularly important is that it is excellently managed! The quality and service are constantly of a high standard. The advantages for Agape are obvious. We are in good company with others some of them Italian who have a strong focus on innovation and design. Design Post offers exhibitors an extraordinary service and reaches a wide spectrum of visitors who are very important to us.

Thanks to retaining a permanent presence here, we are visible all year round — a great advantage for exhibitors, visitors, and above all, planners, who can rely on a constant point of contact. We value the fact that Volker Streckel and his team combine an ambitious approach with a playful, very personal and individual openness. As well as the trade fair and the many other activities and events, both we, as exhibitors, and our visitors enjoy the service and the particularly relaxed ambience at Design Post.

We would like to wish the Design Post Team all the best for the future. Keep up the good work — with passion, intelligence, and aspiration! From your beautiful home in Cologne you are constantly helping to make the world of design furniture a better experience.

Weiter-So — mit Herz, Verstand und Anspruch! The Gerling Quarter From a pure office area to a mixed living and working district What about living and working right in the centre of Cologne? Once upon a time, the Gerling Quarter was home only to the headquarters of a prestigious business. After much controversy and debate, it now has the chance to become a living part of the city.

Cologne is changing. This is quite clear to observe in the Gerling Quarter. It has always been more than just a company headquarters; this is the concrete chronicle of an insurance company and a district in which, after years of rise and fall, is about to start a new chapter with a series of completely different protagonists.

A visionary credited today with having revolutionised the insurance sector, Gerling wanted to build a monument to his empire by way of a small city within the city — employing a design style that no one else had dared to use in Cologne.

In , Hans Gerling granted Kurt Groote the task of rebuilding the company headquarters, the Palais Langen, which had been destroyed during the war.

Gerling knew how to think big — and as a result, he also thought of high-rise structures. His storey headquarters building was the second tallest in Cologne in , and was an annoyance to many people. A dispute emerged with the architects of the Hentrich and Heuser high-rise because Gerling would not accept anything reminiscent of contemporary lightness.

Created using prestigious architectural styles from various centuries, it was something quite particular and totally unusual for the city. This therefore meant that the heroic style of the Gerling buildings within bourgeois Cologne was controversial;.

Today, a walk round the Gereonshof reveals a new Gerling Quarter in an old guise. With the takeover of the company by HDI in , the premises were abandoned and the largest post-war architectural monument in Cologne was sold.

But the saturated office market and its protected-structure status made any future use of the building complex difficult, despite its city centre location. The architects and investors aimed to treat the historical buildings with care and a great degree of allowance. A surprising conversion is that of the high-rise into residential apartments. This entailed the steel skeleton being completely removed and rebuilt in a contemporary fashion, but just as elegantly as the original.

This is a crucial change, because now the loggia that Hentrich and Heuser had planned, which was rejected by Gerling, will actually come into being. The exclusivity of the offices, townhouses and apartments, which includes the most expensive penthouse in the city, has raised concerns about whether the Ger-. Quite literally. Because this area of Cologne, which is so valuable in terms of its architecture, was simply devoid of life.

This provided plenty of material for controversial discussion, but was not a place to linger in. There are a lot of indications that Cologne is more than just a lively, cosmopolitan, and often wilful German city. Hidden behind its name is a somewhat particular worldview. Not just because of its location on the mythical Rhine and its powerful cathedral that can be seen from a great distance. Yilmaz Dziewior was born in , not in Cologne but in Bonn.

Nevertheless, he is a diehard Rhinelander and, after spending a period of time in Hamburg and Bregenz, was appointed director of the renowned Museum Ludwig in February We asked Yilmaz Dziewior what he believes differentiates Cologne from other German. FC mit seinem Music had always been linked to the city — from new talents to BAP.

It is harsh and angular. This is also reflected in the mentality of the people. You come into contact with individuals who possess a very direct, confrontational manner but are at the same time open and warm-hearted.

If he had to pick just three characteristics to describe the people, which would he choose? The next thing we want to know about are the must-see sights, apart from the cathedral. The new Rhine promenade on the opposite riverbank is worth seeing — it affords a wonderful view of the old town, of the cathedral, and of Museum Ludwig.

Now of course we have to ask Dziewior about his favourite pub. You can relax, have a beer; it is not unusual to bump into friends there, and not only people from the art world. But is working in a museum there also different?

What would Cologne be without the brewing tradition and pubs like the Brauhaus? Aber auch. Hier geht es sehr ungezwungen zu. The Cologne Clique, as it is known for miles around, occasionally has its advantages. Any issues that arise can often be solved with a phone call, meaning that matters are settled less bureaucratically than in other places.

But I am also interested in contemporary designers and how they tackle ecological and social issues. When I was in Bregenz, I came to appreciate the high standard of craftsmanship you find there, which Peter Zumthor also incorporates into his buildings in L.

As in contemporary art, I believe it is impossi-. This architect not only designed wonderful architecture and furniture, but she also managed to use these to react to social situations and, as a result, helped shape those situations.

So it just remains for us to ask the director about his attitude toward life in Cologne. And naturally, head over to the brewery afterwards! Und danach, keine Frage, ins Brauhaus!

It is becoming ever more clear that there is very little this mighty material cannot do! These designers are known for their ability to combine high-end technology and the handmade, and to bring personal narratives into the design process. In the installations produced here, some unexpected characteristics of this trademark luxury covering material have been revealed. Long since appreciated for its sensorial, aesthetic, and functional aspects, it also proves to be both ethical and responsible.

One of these locations is nestled between Hall 2 and Hall 3, and. Danish designer Henrik Vibskov has created an eye-catching installation in the first of the two spaces, evoking a science lab experience. Fifteen cones are suspended from the ceiling in a grid formation, slowly moving up and down by means of a motorised mechanism.

In so doing, each of the pointed tips makes contact with a glass vessel containing a bit of water, such that they drip. Visitors can walk in and around the installation. The other three designers realised their works at Kunsthaus Rhenania in the Pas-. It comes in so many colours and thicknesses, which is remarkable. Von aluminium and is covered with foam. The natural-looking result inspired gen.

As an industrial geek, it was great for me to learn about the many complex steps that lead to the end product. This contrast inspired me to develop a gold film that in conjunction with light acquires a reflective effect, transforming the material into something rich and precious.
